Understanding Biofilm in Endoscope Channels

Biofilm is one of the most persistent challenges in endoscope reprocessing — a thin, resilient layer of microorganisms that can form on channel surfaces faster than most cleaning protocols account for.

Why biofilm forms

Every time an endoscope is used, organic material and moisture are left behind in its channels. If that residue isn't fully removed before the next cycle, microorganisms attach to the surface and begin building a protective matrix around themselves — the beginning of a biofilm.

Once established, biofilm is far harder to remove than fresh residue. It resists standard rinsing and can shield organisms from disinfectants, which is why prevention — full contact on every pass — matters more than trying to remove it after the fact.

“Residue and biofilm left behind in missed spots become a starting point for future contamination.”

Where it hides

Coverage gaps aren't evenly distributed. In practice, residue and early biofilm concentrate in a few predictable places:

  • Bends and angulation points, where bristle contact is inconsistent
  • The working channel's smallest diameters, which brushes can't fully reach
  • Suction and biopsy valve ports, which are easy to under-clean by hand

How N-Ball helps

N-Ball was engineered around this exact problem: a hybrid-structure, single-use device that maintains continuous, 360° contact across the full length of the channel in a single pass — including the bends and narrow points brushes tend to miss. And because contact is consistent by design, the outcome doesn't depend on how carefully a brush was handled that day.
